'jack: Straight from the gut' written by Jack Welch and John Byrne.

One of the best examples of vision, imo.

Voice activated weather, anyone?

• Basic management beliefs - competing hard to win, facing reality, motivating people by alternately hugging and kicking them, setting stretch goals, and relentlessly following up on people to make sure things get done
• Business is a lot like a world class restaurant. When you peek behind the kitchen doors, the food never looks as good as when it comes to your table
• Building self-confidence in others is a huge part of leadership
• There are no finite answers to many questions. What really matters is the thought process
• Bosses usually have answers in mind when they hand out questions. To stand-out from the crowd, don't provide answers; provide the unexpected fresh perspective
• Differentiation is about being extreme, rewarding the best and weeding out the ineffective. Rigorous differentiation delivers real stars - and stars build great businesses
• Everybody's got to feel they have a stake in the game. That doesn't mean everyone on the team needs to be treated the same way. Winning teams come from differentiation, rewarding the best, removing the weakest, always fighting to raise the bar
• Quitting doesn't get you out of the pile
• When people make mistakes, the last thing they need is discipline. The job at this point is to restore self-confidence
• Being tough minded and straight forward is the job. So is sensing when to hug and when to kick. Arrogant people have to go. Good people who are eating themselves over an error, our job is to help them through it
• Don't have to take it easy on your top performers
• Using a role model helps make a point to a large group. You can do a negative role model act with your best - as long as they know they are your best
• Set apart small ideas with big potential, give people resources to turn small projects into big businesses
• Everyone in the company has to know that taking a big swing and missing is okay
• Every promotion, every raise, every bonus is a cause for celebration
• Being without regard for any previous leaders of the business, is being an ass
• No one should be ever surprised that they are asked to leave
• During change or transition, the biggest challenge is to get everyone focused on the future
• Don't tolerate 'milk run' sales force - who couldn't find new accounts to save their lives
• Tension between head quarters and field is common in every organization. While the bureaucracy can frustrate, try not to be a visible critic - especially not to the higher ups
• Never be late for meetings
• Realize the importance of getting the right people. Success depends on the people you hire. Makes all the difference in the world. Have an intense obsession about people
• Cut losses quickly on bad hires, slick-talking packages, empty suits. In the hands of the inexperienced, resumes are a dangerous weapon
• Kind performance appraisals would come back and haunt
• There is nothing worse in a business than to work for a boss who doesn't want you to win. This can happen anywhere, at any level, and occurs more often than we think
• You don't have to build scale to be competitive
• Leveraging brainpower is easier than grinding out products
• Understand profit per employee vs. revenue per employee
• Demand high performance standards; provide 'leapfrog' opportunities to promising employees; create an atmosphere that attracts talent and ambition. Beware of 'ambition on sleeve'
• Each business leader needs to have the same authority the board gives the CEO
• Managers must not consider their positions a career capstone, but as a fresh opportunity
• Management has a tendency to take the smallest bite of the cost apple. A business is never ruined because it reduced its costs too much, too fast
• In a business plan, there is little percentage in betting on hope
• Beware of superficial congeniality. Self-delusion can grip an entire organization and lead people into ridiculous conclusions
• Search out and participate in real growth industries and insist upon being number one or number two in every business
• Vision: People must be encouraged to see things as they are, deal with the way it is, not the way they wished it would be, but to being winners of the future.
• Leaders don't accept lay-ups
• Accounting doesn't generate cash, managing businesses does
• If you want excellence, at a minimum, workplace ambience has to reflect excellence
• Pay the highest wages, while having the lowest wage costs
• Manage long-term, while 'eating' short-term. Test of a leader is balancing the two
• Function as one organization with different styles
• Have the vision to be the first to move out of troubled businesses. If you are the last, your people could be in the unemployment line
• Do more for your people if your balance sheet lets you (வேறுபாட்டைக் கவனிக்கவும். P&L என்று சொல்லவில்லை)
• Any organization that thinks it can guarantee job security is going down a dead end
• Give people the skills, resources and experiences that guarantees 'employability', not 'employment'
• Leaders don't like 'I think' answers
• While media focuses on the 'layoffs', leaders focus on the 'keepers'
• Change doesn't come from a slogan or speech. It happens because you put the right people in place to make it happen
• Finance and Audit must be business supporters, not corporate police
• 'A's hire 'A's
• In spite of outward appearance, leaders are a cautious bunch. Not tough-minded enough
• Visionary leaders consciously build 'hiding places' to ensure business longevity
• Routinely wallow
• Always look for strategic options in acquisitions; the emotional lift from a transaction is every bit as important
• Finding great people happens in all kinds of ways; everyone you meet is another interview
• Build great people, who then would build great products and services
• In manufacturing, stamp out variance; in people, variance is everything
• 360 degree evaluations can be gamed; can create 'horse's asses', people kissing up and down
• Force business leaders to differentiate their leadership. This is how great organizations are built (GEன் பிரபல 'vitality curve' பற்றி அறிந்து கொள்ளலாம்)
• Leaders are aware that change has no constituency - and a perceived revolution has even less
• Create energy centers to facilitate decisions to 'take unnecessary work out of the system' (GEன் பிரபல work-out சித்தாந்தத்தைப் பற்றிய விவரத்திலிருந்து)
• Create a boundaryless organization, opening up to best ideas from employees and from outside companies
• Leaders understand their four types of managers
o Type 1: delivers on commitments and shares values. Easy call
o Type 2: does not meet commitments and does not share values. Not pleasant, but an easy call
o Type 3: misses commitments, but shares all values. Give them a second or third chance
o Type 4: delivers on commitments, does not share values. Difficult call. A boundaryless organization cannot afford them
• Excellence and competitiveness aren't incompatible with honesty and integrity
• Six Sigma isn't only for engineers; it is for the best and brightest in any function
• A CEO's primary social responsibility is to assure the financial success of the company
• People first; strategy second
